I had been contemplating how to innovate the traditional gameplay mechanics commonly found in rhythm games like DJMax. With this in mind, I aimed to create a game that would not only offer intuitive and popular songs that both seasoned rhythm game players and newcomers could enjoy but also incorporate a variety of graphic effects to keep the gameplay engaging and free from monotony.
Role:
Producer & Programmer
Duration:
7 weeks
Challenges
Complex Feature Integration: Implementing differentiated features such as real-time music wave height tracking, score measurement systems, and graphic adjustment settings.
User-Centric Design: Designing an intuitive interface that caters to users of varying skill levels in rhythm games, from beginners to experienced players.
Scalability: Ensuring the app can handle a growing user base and future updates without compromising performance.
My Approach
Discovery Phase
Core Logic Research: Conducted thorough reference analysis to understand the essential logic required for developing a rhythm game.
Scope Adjustment: Created and adjusted detailed project plans to ensure development goals were achievable within the set timeframe, without interfering with academic commitments.
Design and Development
UI/UX Design: Designed a clean and intuitive interface with easy navigation and visually appealing graphics to motivate users.
Feature Implementation: Developed and integrated key features like a scoring system, wave measurement system, visual updates, and a graphics settings system.
Stage Expansion: Developed and added multiple stages to enhance gameplay variety, expanding the initial single tutorial stage into a more diverse gaming experience.
Testing and Iteration
User Testing: Conducted extensive usability testing with target users to gather feedback and refine the app interface and functionality.
Performance Optimization: Implemented optimizations for speed, reliability, and security to ensure a seamless user experience.
Results
The program was completed within a short period and successfully launched as an HTML version, receiving positive feedback from peers and professors.
This achievement contributed to an A+ grade for the semester. Key metrics such as player retention and engagement exceeded expectations within the first two months post-launch.
The program's vibrant design, the limited time available for development, and the fact that it was created within less than a month of starting to learn coding contributed to its popularity among many people.
Future Plans
Code Improvement: The code, created in my freshman year, has weaknesses in maintainability and efficiency. I plan to enhance it by applying advanced design patterns like Abstract Factory.
Expansion: Given that the development was completed within a short five-week period, the content is still limited. I plan to explore ways to expand the program to offer a richer gameplay experience.
Conclusion
Through strategic planning, meticulous design, and agile development, I successfully delivered a rhythm game that not only met but exceeded the expectations of multiple players, providing an experience accessible to all.
This project underscored my dedication to differentiation and user-centric solutions in the competitive gaming market.
